A shout out to the 1966 short story by Philip K. Dick that got made into the movie Total Recall. In the short story, Douglas Quail, an office worker, dreams of going to Mars but can't afford it. But there's this company called Rekal that can implant memories which make it seem like you went to Mars, and for a lot cheaper. So he has them do that, but as they're performing the procedure they discover that he was previously an assassin who had all memories of his former life erased.
